Adhere to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance with our Emergency First Aid at Work training course.

Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work is the ideal course for low-risk environments such as offices and shops. Although, it is suitable for those assisting with first aid requirements in higher-risk organisations.

During the course, you’ll learn techniques and topics that the HSE regards as important in the workplace, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the recovery position and abdominal thrusts.

Therefore, helping your workplace meet legislation such as The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 which states that first aiders must receive suitable training.

Emergency First Aid at Work Content

Over the course, candidates will learn a variety of techniques. These include performing CPR, assessing an incident scene and treating burns and seizures. The full course content is:

  1. Role and Responsibilities of a First Aider
    1. Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
    2. Minimising the risk of infection to yourself and others
    3. Consent: When, how and why you need it.
  2. Assessing an Incident
    1. Conducting a scene survey
    2. Conducting a primary survey (DR ABCD)
    3. Asking for Assistance
  3. Unresponsive Casualties
    1. Knowing when to conduct Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    2. Practicing the CPR technique, including the use of AED / Defibrillator
    3. Knowing when to place a casualty into the Recovery Position
    4. Practicing the Recovery Position technique
    5. Treating seizures
  4. Choking
    1. Identifying signs of severe and mild choking
    2. Practicing abdominal thrust technique
  5. External Bleeding
    1. Identifying the severity of the external bleeding
    2. Practicing bandaging technique
  6. Shock
    1. Identifying the symptoms of shock
    2. Treating a casualty who is experiencing shock
  7. Anaphylaxis
    1. Identifying the symptoms of Anaphylactic shock
    2. Providing emergency care for casualties experiencing anaphylactic shock, including support with the administration of an EpiPen.
  8. Minor Injuries
    1. Treating casualties with small cuts, bruises, splinters, etc
    2. Applying first aid to minor burns and scalds

Assessment and Certification

First aid is a highly practical subject which means you’ll get the chance to perform numerous practical activities throughout the day (CPR, the Recovery Position, etc). Whilst you complete each task, your tutor will assess your capability to make sure that you are performing each technique correctly.

In addition, you’ll sit a short question paper comprising of 10 multiple-choice questions.

You must pass both the practical assessment and the question paper to gain your certificate.

After passing the course, you’ll receive your certificate is valid for 3 years. After which time, you must retake the course to continue practicing as a first aider.

Highfield Qualifications or NucoPlus accredits our Emergency First Aid at Work course which, in turn, is regulated by OFQUAL and CCEA.

Who needs Emergency First Aid at Work training?

Emergency first aid is ideal for any size company.

But, it is particularly designed for low-risk businesses.

Your company’s risk assessments should identify your first aid requirements and outline the type and number of first aiders your workplace requires.
